Waiting for Shinigami
Chapter 11 I did a lot of thinking between that morning, when I woke up in Heero's arms, and that afternoon, when I sat in the park waiting for Miss Gracie. I thought about Quatre and Trowa, about Miss Gracie, and Wufei, whom I'd yet to see. I thought about Heero, good God, but I thought about Heero But mostly, for the first time I could really remember, I thought about what I wanted out of life. Heero. That was easy, obvious, and at the same time, complicated and scary. I knew that I wasn'tin love with him, not yet, but that getting that way wouldn't be hard, not unless what Miss Gracie said was true. Which brought me to my next topic of reflection: did
I have a placein life, and if so, what was it? I chased my thoughts
around in circles over this one, bitterly reminding myself after every
real I looked up from my thoughts to find that Miss Gracie was late.Very late. With a shrug, I stood up and headed for her house. Perhaps she had fallen asleep over her romance novel. I was so lost in my own thoughts that I almost missed the sound, coming from the alleyway. It was a thick, heavy tapping sound. I froze. I'd heard that sound before. I knew it all too well. Fear gripped my heart as a sprinted down the alleyway, tossing aside a few rubbish bins like they weighed nothing. There, propped up against a wall and covered with bits of cardboard boxes, was what I'd somehow known I'd find. Miss Gracie's white hair was seeped red with blood on one side, and a bruise was forming on the cheek below it. The sound I had heard was blood, dripping from where it gathered at her ear onto the cardboard around her. She was unconscious, but her pulse was strong. It was hard to tell in the dim light, but I didn't think her eyes dilated when I gently forced them open. I took a few tissues from her purse, which had been ransacked, and tried to wipe away some of the blood, to see how big the wound was. Small enough, but with the potential to cause big trouble. Carefully as I possibly could, I picked the old woman up. Without the benefit of her warm eyes and her knowing grin, she seemed so much older. When she was cradled like a child in my arms, I set off. Her house was still two whole blocks. I knew of somewhere that was one-and-a-half. I'm sure we must have been a sight to see, a grim, long-haired man carrying a little old woman with blood running down her face through the streets. But you can see all sorts of shit at Preventers. When I strode through the reception area, the woman behind the desk hardly spared me a glance. "Good afternoon, Mr. Maxwell. Exam Room Two, please." I didn't ask how she knew who I was, because I didn't honestly care. I went straight to Exam Room Two and found Sally there waiting for me. She didn't say a word about me being there, just pulled on some gloves and said "Status" "Sixty-four-year-old robbery victim, blunt force trauma to the head, severe bleeding, possible concussion," I reeled off, hardly aware that I'd already organized this information in my mind. "Friend of yours?" Sally asked sympathetically. She indicated for me to lay Miss Gracie on the examining table as I nodded. "I've already called an ambulance. I'll do what I can until they get here. There's someone waiting outside to take your statement. And you know Lady Une won't let you leave the building without talking to her." "I know," I said, my voice a little harder than I'd expected it to be. I went back out and gave a brief statement. In the middle of it, Heero came down the hall, face worried. He didn't say a word until he'd folded my tightly into his arms. "How is she?" "Not sure yet. The ambulance should be here any minute to take her to the hospital. When I finish here, I'm going to call Veruca. She should be home by now." "I'll do that. Wufei is coming to help Sally move Miss Gracie to the ambulance, and then he's supposed to take you, by "whatever means necessary" to see Lady Une," I nodded. "I expected that. Don't worry, I won't do anything foolish. I'm just going to talk to her today." It was a few minutes later that Wufei surprised me with a silent, sympathetic hug. "This way," he said after a few moments. No surprise to see me, no `hey, Duo, how you been since I last saw you three years ago?' not even a `fuck off, you braided bastard'. Just calm acceptance of my presence and a deep-rooted compassion. We took the elevator up and then I followed Wufei through the halls. He stopped for a moment. "When you are finished with Une, come here." He pointed to a door on the right. "That is my office. Heero will be there, and we will go to the hospital," With that, he was moving again. When we reached the end of the hall, he opened the door at the end and we walked into the reception area. "Duo? I'm not suggesting anything, mind you, but if you pull out that green wire as you go by, and the secretary won't be able to tell her you're coming. She hates that." I gave him a real smile and thought I heard him chuckle when I gave said wire a yank as I passed the protesting secretary without a glance. "Good afternoon," I said cheerfully as I burst into Une's office. The secretary was a few steps behind me, having run down the short hallway between her desk and Une's door. Lady Une looked at her. "He's just like the other four, isn't he? We really should rewire the system. It isn't your fault, Gina. If I didn't blame you for the Quatre incident, I certainly know you're not at fault for this." The girl nodded and left. "A replacement," Une said. "My normal secretary has the day off. She wouldn't have batted an eyelash over it." "What's `the Quatre incident?'" I asked. "Oh, he disconnected the wire and came right in while I was changing for a business dinner. By the time Gina got here, I was reviewing his assignment in my slip." She waved it away with a hand. "Have a seat," I did. We both waited. "I'm sorry about your friend," she said at last. "Thank you," I replied, then hesitated, and continued, "Look, if you're expecting me to be some kind of avenging angel, come to ask for my badge so I can track whoever did this to her down from the right side of the law, then you're going to be disappointed. That particular ass is mine no matter what jacket I'm wearing." "But?" she prompted. No protest about how I couldn't do that, not from her. I think Heero is right. Une is a lot smarter than people give her credit for, and that's saying something. "But, I'm willing to listen. I was thinking about it this morning, before any of this happened. I didn't think I had anything left to prove, and I don't. But the truth of it is, I've been selfish. I don't want to do that anymore. I want to help people. I think I can help people, and I think Preventers might be the way to do it. So I'll listen. I won't say yes and I won't say no. I have to think about what I want. Today, just tell me." Lady Une smiled at me. "I wasn't sure, but you just might be Preventers material, after all. All right, Duo. I know you want to go visit your friend, so I'll get straight to the point. It boils down to this-" ~ * ~ |
